This suburb carries its history in its housing. Older houses from the years either side of the Federation era climb the hilly slopes around Lauderdale Avenue and Fairlight Crescent, dating back to when the old Red Hill name was still in use.

Nearer the shops and the water, mid-rise units fill the gaps between those older houses, plenty of them renovated or oriented to catch a harbour view. Edwin Street shows the mix well: double-brick originals sitting beside newer infill squeezed onto smaller blocks.

Each of those building eras leaves its own trace below the floor. In the pre-war houses, galvanised steel and clay pipe were standard, and both wear out from the inside long before anyone notices.

Blocks around Hill Street and Griffiths Street sit on some of the steeper ground in the suburb, which is exactly where that drainage pressure shows up first. Further down toward Woods Parade and Rosedale Avenue, the older foreshore homes carry the same ageing pipe story, just closer to the water.

Hot water failure is the single most common after-hours call from this suburb. Units fitted decades ago in the older houses are ageing out together, and they rarely warn you before they quit.

Pipe bursts run a close second. A galvanised or clay joint that has been quietly corroding for years tends to let go overnight, when the house is at its coldest and the pressure is at its steadiest.

Seaforth is our home turf, and Fairlight is close enough to sit inside our everyday coverage rather than at the edge of it.
